Peru is on the South Pacific Ocean in the west of South America. It has very different climates in different parts of the country. It is tropical in the east, dry in the west and temperate to frigid in the Andes mountains.

The population is 27.5 million. 45 percent of the population is native Amerindian. 37% is Mestizo (part Amerindian and part white). The official languages are Spanish and Quechua.

The economy is based around fishing, and gold mining. In 2002 and 2003 it was one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America.

People in different parts of the country have different lifestyles. People in the cities live a modern lifestyle, though today many live in poverty. Mountain people tend to live a more traditional lifestyle on small family farms. They don't have television, computers or appliances.

Until 1533 the Incas were based in Lima and ruled their own country. In 1533 the Spanish Conquistadores came. The Incas loved music and it is still an important part of Peruvian culture today. Family is also an important part of Peruvian culture. Most children share a house with their parents, grandparents and other family members. The whole family looks after the elderly.
