Hong Kong is in South China. It has a population of 6.8 million. The language is Chinese.

Hong Kong was under British jurisdiction until 1 July 1997 when it reverted back to China. It has been designated as a Special Administrative Region and is governed by China under a philosophy of 'one country, two systems.'

Hong Kong has a tropical climate. It is cool and humid in winter and hot and wet in summer. It is quite hilly and comprises over 200 islands.

Hong Kongers welcome you into their homes. It is common to bring a gift. Traditionally gifts are given and received with both hands. Usually the gift is not opened in front of you. It is opened later when you have left. When visiting someone's home it is a good idea to bring a gift of candy, cookies, fruit, alcohol or something from your country. You should not give the following as gifts: clocks (= death), books (= bad luck for gamblers), blankets (=downturn in prosperity), green hats, unwrapped gifts or gifts wrapped in blue (=death). Good colours for wrapping gifts are red, pink and gold.
