Guam is an island in the North Pacific Ocean. It is three quarters of the way from Hawaii to The Philippines.

It is a tropical island with a coral reef. Fishing and tourism are the main industries. Guam has a small poulation of around 166,000 people. However, each year there are over one million tourists. 90 per cent of the tourists are from Japan.

Guam was ruled by Spain until 1898 when the US took over. They were briefly ruled by the Japanese from 1941 to 1944. English is the official language.

The natives of Guam are called the Chamorro. They make up 50 percent of the pouplation. Their culture is characterised by respect, caring, help eachother and a spirit of co-operation.
