Fiji is an island in the South Pacific Ocean. It is about two thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. Fiji has a tropical climate and is quite mountainous.

Fiji was governed by Britain until 1970 when it gained independence. There were several military coups from 1987 onwards, but it has been peaceful since the government was democratically elected in 2001.

The population is 880,000 and the majority of people are either Melanesian (51%) or Indian (44%). English is the official language, but Fijian and Hindustani are also common. The literacy rate is 93 percent.

The main industries are timber, fishing, gold mining and oil. Tourism is a growing industry. Half a million tourists visit each year and they are made to feel quite special.
