We often use did in negative questions to express surprise.
you hear the phone?
(= It was
right next to you! I am very surprised!)
Didn't Alice get the job?
(= I am suprised.
I was confident she would get it.)
Didn't you try sushi when you were in Japan?
(= I am surprised.
I thought all tourists tried sushi in Japan.)
negative questions.. Example:
I hoped it wouldn't rain. (bring an umbrella)
I borrowed Paul's jacket? (you bring one)
2. Sam failed his exams. (study hard)
3. Jason needs new books. (take care of his old ones?)
4. I don't recommend that movie. (enjoy it)
