New Year was first celebrated in Babylon 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians on the day of the first new moon after the start of Spring. It was a time of new beginnings. Crops were planted and flowers blossomed. The celebration for 11 days.
Today English speaking countries on January 1st. People make a New Year's resolution; for example, many people promise to give up smoking or lose weight. Many people New Year's Eve parties. At midnight they sing a traditional song called 'Auld Lang Syne.' The song is about remembering times that now passed. Everyone wishes each other a happy New Year.
