Most homes are decorated with Christmas trees. Some people decorate the outside of their home with coloured Christmas lights. Millions of people send Christmas cards to each other.

Father Christmas is based on a real person called Saint Nicholas. Nicholas came from Turkey in the 4th century. He was shy and wanted to give money to poor people without them knowing who gave the money. It is said that one day he dropped a sock full of money down the chimney of a poor person's house.
