INTERMEDIATE GRAMMAR 16B

will & would (page 1)

In this lesson we're going to look at both will and would.

Let’s start by looking at will. It is used for spontaneous decisions to do something. It has several common uses.

1. OFFER
I’ll carry that for you.
I’ll pay for that.

2. REQUESTS
Will you close the door please?
Will you get some toothpaste when you are at the supermarket?

3. PROMISES TO DO SOMETHING
I’ll bring your laptop back on Tuesday.
I’ll phone you when I get there.

4. SPONTANEOUS DECISIONS TO DO SOMETHING
(1, 2 & 3 are all spontaneous too. They are NOT planned.)
I’m running late.
I’ll catch a taxi to the airport.
I forgot to ring Paul. I’ll do it now.

Note:
You can see that we generally use the short form; I’ll, he’ll, she’ll, they’ll and so on.
