Aborigines

Read the information about Aborigines. Then answer the questions below.

1. Aborigines arrived in Australia 50,000 years ago. They had no contact with other people for 10,000 years before Europeans arrived. When Europeans came, they brought many diseases with them. Many Aborigines died because of European diseases.

3. Aborigines have strong spiritual beliefs. They call the beginning of the world the Dreamtime or the Dreaming. They believe that in the Dreamtime their ancestors came from under the ground and created animals, water and the sky. Many of their ancestors have become animals or parts of the land.
2. 2 percent of Australia's population today is Aboriginal. That's about 400,000 people. There are thousands of different Aboriginal languages, but many of them have been lost in the last 200 years.

4. Aborigines didn't have writing. They used stories, songs, art and dances to tell their history to their children. Their main musical instrument was the didgeridoo. It makes a low, humming sound. It can make the sound of a kangaroo hopping along the land or the sound of the wind in the trees.
