The historic Japan – North Korea summit has achieved significant breakthroughs. Mr Koizumi, the first Japanese Prime Minister to visit North Korea, spent two hours in discussion with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il in Pyongyang.

Mr Kim called for an end to hostility with Japan and apologised for kidnapping 11 Japanese 20 years ago. He revealed that 6 have since died of natural causes or disaster, one is missing and 4 are free to return home. North Korea also said it was willing to talk to America and it would put a freeze on missile tests. Mr Koizumi apologised for colonising Korea from 1910 to 1945.
