Pele is the world’s greatest soccer player. He was born to a poor family in Brazil in 1941. When he was a young teenager he used to shine shoes to earn money.

He was discovered by Waldemar de Brito. De Brito was one of Brazil’s best players. He brought Pele to Sao Paulo and said to soccer directors, “this boy will be the greatest soccer player in the world."

He was right! In his first game against Corinthians F.C., Pele scored a goal right away. He was only 16. In the 1958 World Cup in Sweden Pele scored six goals. He was only 17 years old. A legend was born!

During his career he scored 1,280 goals in 1,360 games. Pele is a hero to many people in many countries.
