The Quiet American

It’s 1952 and the movie takes us to Vietnam. The French are still there. The US is there. There are capitalists and communists all plotting and planning. Who will control the country?

Thomas Fowler (Michael Caine) is a middle-aged English newspaper reporter living in Saigon. He is having an affair with a young Vietnamese woman called Phuong. Fowler meets a young American man, Pyle, the quiet American of the title. Pyle soon falls in love with Phuong and tries to win her love. There is more to Pyle than meets the eye.

The movie has a gentle quiet mood that is occasionally interrupted by violence and an element of mystery.
